What are the different activity types?

This guide explains all of the different activity types, how they can be accessed and implemented

'Activity' refers to a form of learning content that can be applied in Courses and Live Learnings, OR specific content that can be created individually, such as Pages, Resources and Videos.  Activities can be utilised in multiple spaces across our platform, and each Activity has a unique purpose.

Course and Live Learning Activities include:

Quiz Plus

Quiz Plus allows the creation of quizzes with questions of different types, such as multiple-choice, ranked order, and short-answer.

It can be set to allow multiple attempts and have questions shuffled. Each attempt can be automatically marked, except for open-ended questions.

Attempts can be analysed in grading for immediate feedback on performance.

Quizzes can be used as:

  • Knowledge checks
  • Practice exercises
  • Mini tests at the end of a topic
  • Course exams

Assignment

The assignment activity module enables a facilitator or administrator to communicate tasks, collect work and provide grades and feedback.

Checklist

A Checklist activity allows you to create a list of items that a user can tick off as they go. This is useful if you have some steps that need to be taken outside of the LMS that complement this content.

Feedback Form

A Feedback activity is a survey or form that can be filled out by users. This is useful in allowing a user to provide feedback to administrators and facilitators after completing, viewing or attending learning material.

Forum

A forum activity enables participants to have discussions that take place over an extended period of time.

Label

A Label Activity enables creation of a label that may be used as a heading or separator to logically group and organise a long list of activities in the Course view page.

Page

A page activity enables the use of a rich text editor to create headings, paragraphs, embedded links, maps, videos, images and other web content. This allows a large variety of material to be delivered.

Quiz

The quiz activity enables a teacher to create quizzes comprising questions of various types, including multiple choice, matching, short-answer and numerical.

The teacher can allow the quiz to be attempted multiple times, with the questions shuffled or randomly selected from the question bank. A time limit may be set.

Each attempt is marked automatically, with the exception of essay questions, and the grade is recorded in the gradebook.

The teacher can choose when and if hints, feedback and correct answers are shown to students.

Quizzes may be used:

  • As course exams
  • As mini tests for reading assignments or at the end of a topic
  • As exam practice using questions from past exams
  • To deliver immediate feedback about performance
  • For self-assessment

Resource

A Resource is a collection of files which can be viewed and downloaded by users. It is useful for adding content like readings, handouts and video tutorials to a course.

SCORM

A SCORM package is a collection of files which are packaged according to an agreed standard for learning objects. The SCORM activity module enables SCORM or AICC packages to be uploaded as a zip file and added to a course. Alternatively, the URL of a remote SCORM or AICC package can be provided.

Users can complete a SCORM package by successfully completing the criteria within the package.

Subcourse

A Subcourse Activity acts as a link to a separate Course or Live Learning. The completion of this activity is informed by the external Course or Live Learning.

URL

A URL activity allows you to add a link to any webpage.

Video

A video activity can be an uploaded MP4 video, or a link to an external video. You also have the option to provide closed captions and a video transcript for users to download.

xAPI Module

The xAPI, also known as the TinCan or Experience API is a advanced activity launcher that allows users to launch modules hosted on an external domain and report back to the system.

By setting an xAPI compatible activity as the URL, you can track completion of the external module.

Wiki

A Wiki activity is a collection of related information, in which users can share their thoughts and ideas about the content.
