Video Activity Completion Threshold

As of patch 1.7.16, choose how much of a video learners must watch to complete it.

What's changed

  • You can now set a Completion threshold (%) on each video - the percentage a learner has to watch before it's marked complete.
  • New videos start at 90%. You can change this to anything from 1% to 100%.
  • Videos you created before this release are untouched - they keep their previous threshold of 57% until you change them.
  • Videos now complete correctly at faster playback speeds. Previously, a video watched at 2x or faster could fail to register as complete even when watched in full. That's fixed.

Why it matters

You decide how much of a video counts as "watched". Until now, that was a fixed value you couldn't change; now it's yours to set per video, so a two-minute intro and a 45-minute deep dive can each have a threshold that makes sense.

It also closes a long-standing gap: many learners speed videos up, and until now that could quietly stop their completion from being recorded, which held up course progress and reporting. Learners can now watch at any speed and still get credit for finishing, while skipping ahead still doesn't count.

How to set the completion threshold

On a standalone video

Create or edit a video. In the video's settings you'll see a Completion threshold (%) field. Enter the percentage a learner must watch to complete it (new videos start at 90%).
Please note - existing videos will keep the previous value of 57% unless it is updated.

On a video activity inside a course or face-to-face event
  1. Add or edit the video activity and set its completion to Users must watch the video. The Completion threshold (%) field appears just below, ready to set.

That's it - there's nothing to turn on, and the threshold applies the next time a learner watches.

FAQ

Do I need to update my existing videos?

No. Every video you already have keeps working exactly as before (a threshold of 57%) until you change it. Nothing changes for your current content unless you edit it.

Why does a new video start at 90% when my older ones show 57%?

90% is the starting point for videos created following release 1.7.16, based on best practice for what counts as "watched". Your existing videos were left on their previous value of 57%, so nothing changed for your learners. You can set either to anything from 1% to 100%.

My learners speed videos up - will they still get completion?

Yes. Learners can watch at 1x, 2x, or faster and still have the video marked complete once they've watched enough of it. Before this release, faster speeds could stop completion from registering; that's now fixed.

A learner watched a video at 2x before this update and it still shows incomplete. What should they do?

Ask them to open the video and watch it again. The fix works going forward, so it won't automatically update a watch from before the update - but watching again now will complete correctly at any speed.

Can a learner skip to the end to complete a video?

No. Jumping ahead doesn't count as watching, so skipping to the end won't mark the video complete. Learners need to actually watch up to your threshold.

What values can I set?

Any whole number from 1 to 100. If you leave the field blank or enter something outside that range, you'll be asked to correct it before saving.

Known limitations

  • The completion threshold is set on each video individually. There isn't a single setting that changes every video at once.
  • The threshold only applies when a video activity's completion is set to Users must watch the video. It doesn't apply if the activity is set to complete manually.
